Statistics says that stuttering is a serious problem for millions of people. Up to 2.5 percent of the population of our planet suffers from stuttering. The more developed the country and its language is the more is the number of stuttering people in this country, and vice a versa. For instance, the number of people with stuttering in Africa is much less than in Europe.
In the majority of cases stuttering shows up in the early age and may accompany a man for all his life. In theory there are three types of stuttering: neurotic (logoneurosis), neurosis-like and mixed. Stuttering is a type of frontier neuropsychic disease. The main symptom is a convulsive dysphrasia (speech disturbance).
In 90 percent of cases stuttering shows up in the age of 2-5 years old, in the period of intense speech forming process. A child in the age of 1.5-2 years old usually uses several dozens of words and in the age of 4 he knows almost all words of the everyday vocabulary of an adult. That means that for a period of 2 years a giant language leap happens. Since our speech is the most difficult function of the organism it is the most vulnerable function as well. On all the difficulties of this period children response with speech disturbances such as stuttering.
Boys stutter in 3-4 times more frequent than girls. It is considered that boy's nervous system is less resistant to neuropsychic disorders. During the period of speech formation girls are already more developed physically and mentally than boys of the same age. Besides boys are more frequent to get into a psycho traumatic situation by their will and nature and that trauma in its turn can start the process of stuttering. It can be gained in one second or during a long period of time. Usually it is an abrupt event that shocked a child. But neurotic stuttering appears not only due to these factors.
Frequently stuttering develops if a child feels himself deserted and unloved and if he is treated badly and no one talks to him. Parent's quarrels and family alcoholism make the situation even worse. All these factors influence a child's nervous system; keep it under a constant emotional pressure and weakens it. As a result it can lead to stuttering. But not only children from trouble families are in danger. A child that is brought up in the atmosphere of idolatry and permissiveness doesn't form a necessary habit of active patience. And when such child finds himself in the situation where he must show self-restriction he may response on it with stuttering.
Stuttering develops fast when a child gets into the extreme situation that causes the strongest consternation and as a result - emotional shock. Parents should know that children are more often influenced by adult's frights than being frightened by theirs. Usually they are afraid of parents' reaction on some event but not of the event itself. The younger the child is the easier it is to affect his mentality harmfully that will lead him to stuttering.
Stuttering can be healed, but people must understand that only 5-7 percent of children will stop to stutter forever. Stuttering can disappear itself without any treatment.
The younger the child is the more chances he has to recover from stuttering. Approximately till the age of 5 year old a child doesn't need any speech therapist attention. But it is necessary to show him to a doctor. A specialist will consult parents about the ways to strengthen the child's nervous system, prescribe a sedative and recommend a certain day schedule. If till the age of 5 stuttering continues it is time to ask specialists to help - psychoneurologist, neuropathologist, and speech therapist. There are a lot of strategies to help a child to stop to stutter that combine psychotherapy with additional exercises: motor activity development, respiratory gymnastics etc. Parents that want to help their child to defeat stuttering should by no means get caught in an endless loop on this defect. After all, stuttering is not a fatal disease.
A child with stuttering is absolutely normal. All he needs is some help to adapt to some particular qualities of his speech. If parents love him, play with him and talk to him seriously, he will be a self-confident person. Just that calmness and high self-appraisal will help him to face mockery of other children. It is also a great plus if a child goes in for sport. It will help him to be strong physically, strengthen his nervous system and give him new friends and new life experience.
With favorable conditions (developed clever family, versatile interests, and interesting job) the importance of stuttering comes to nothing. An adult can even forget about his defect. Sometimes stuttering almost disappears (it becomes noticeable only when a man is very nervous).
