Anorexia nervosa is an ingestion disorder that leads to a heavy nutrition insufficiency and cachexy.
Usually young women are subject to anorexia nervosa, infrequently young men. The reasons of anorexia still remain unknown. Different endocrine diseases are often observed in cases of anorexia. Usually in the families of anorexia suffering people a lot of attention is given to sports and balanced nutrition. And patients decrease their food ration to minimum in order to control their body weight.
Major symptoms of anorexia nervosa are:
1. A fear of obesity in spite of insufficient body weight.
2. Constant growing thin.
3. Serious food consuming limitation.
4. Taking laxatives, diuretics, and medicines containing thyroid gland hormones.
5. Incorrect self-appraisal of body shape and weight.
6. Absence of menstruation during three months or more.
7. Osteoporosis.
8. Slowing down stomach evacuation.
9. Constipation.
10. Gall-stones.
11. Acute pancreatitis.
12. Arterial hypotonia.
13. Xerodermia and itching.
It is rather hard to diagnose such a disease. Except of some typical symptoms, it is necessary to make a series of medical tests:
1. Blood test on growth hormone.
2. Luteinizing and follicle-stimulating hormone test.
Medical treatment of anorexia nervosa consists of a complex of measures directed on body weight and nutrition normalization.
Anorexia treatment should be directed on:
1. Normal nutrition resumption.
2. Normal body weight restoring.
3. Psychological problems solution.
In 50% of cases treatment becomes difficult due to different mental illnesses. But in case of qualified medical help it is a strong chance of quick recovery and body weight normalization.
In difficult cases it is necessary to hospitalize the patient and to prescribe him a complex therapy directed on body weight normalization and intense psychotherapy.
